Epilogue ( A play)
Empty street (or road).
Yellow streetlight.
Ray lying on the left. Her head is toward behind. A circle of salt surrounds her.
Frances enters. She hurried from the right. Three steps. Halt.
Frances [ Peacefully. ] How dare you.
[ Frances goes right. Quickly returns with a bottle of water. She hurries from the right. Three steps. Halt. ]
Frances [ Pause] It’s too soon.
[ Frances goes towards Ray. Frances splashes the water onto Ray. Ray wakes up. Ray sits up. ]
Ray [ lights up a cigarette.] what time is it?
Frances [ looks at her watch ] It’s almost the end.
[ looks at Ray, angrily ] How dare you.
Ray I did nothing.
[ Pause.]
I do nothing.
Frances [ Paces around the right area.] Of course you do nothing. [calm to fierce.] I eat. I drink. I sleep. I walk. I sing. I dance. I think. I suffer. And you lies here, doing nothing! [aggressively]
[ At the end of her monologue Frances is facing right. She halts.]
Ray And you do nothing.
[ Ray put out the cigarette and lies down. Quickly she sits up again. ]
Ray Maybe we should switch.
Frances [ Turns her head toward Ray] Yes! Yes, thank you very much. I’d like to switch.
[ Ray stands up and walks slowly to the right. Ray is facing right. Frances walks swiftly to the salt circle and lies down. ]
[ Pause.]
Ray I eat. I drink. I live. I die. It’s too late to end it all. [ desperately]
Frances [ sits up] Maybe we should switch back.
Ray Brilliant idea.
[ Frances stands up and walks swiftly to the right. Ray walks slowly to the left. Quickly after they met, Frances halts. ]
Frances Ray!
[Ray halts. Frances walks three steps to the right. Then she turns around and walks six steps to the left. Right besides Ray. Ray turns around and faces Frances. Ray slaps France in the face. Pause. Then they both turn around. Off the frame. ]
Ray [ Only the voice] Frances!
[Ray enters the frame from the left and walks three steps at the center of the salt circle. Frances enters from the right and walks up to Ray. Pause. Frances kisses Ray.]
Frances What time is it?
Ray I will leave you.
[ Ray lies down in the circle. Frances walks to the right. Off the frame. ]
