Soul Kitchen

Fixed shot. The camera focuses on the center of the kitchen. The title appears as ‘Soul Kitchen.’ There’s the sound of boiling pot from the background.

[Scene one: In the dusk of evening. Outside the window, the snow falling. Inside, a small kitchen. A boiling pot is in the right corner beside a cupboard. In the center, there’s a round table and a chair, a pile of books are put on the table with several papers and pencils. One cover of the book printed a young woman’s photo and introduction as ‘Best-sell writer’. The candle lights up the whole room in a warm dim color.]

Medium shot. With the sound of door opening, the camera pans to the right.

[A young woman, exactly the one on the book cover but seems a bit tired, is already walked in, she closes the door, takes off her scarf and coat, and put them on the back of the door. She is short hair and thin, not very pretty but has her own charm. She wears a decent black wool coat, a blouse and striped wool trousers.]

Medium shot. The camera follows her slowly pushing to the corner of the boiling pot.

[She walks to the boiling pot and makes a cup of tea. Then she hesitates for a second and opens the cupboard.]

Close shot. The camera shots inside the cupboard from her point of view.

[The cupboard is full of jars of peanut butter, varies from sizes and colors. She picks up carefully and finally takes one peanut butter with a pink jar.]

Medium shot. The camera pans from right to the center of the kitchen. When she sits, she takes up half of the frame and her side face is shown.

[She sits down, lights up a cigarette, picks up a pencil on the table and begins to write. She writes a few sentence and then quickly crosses off these. Then her eyes turn to the jar of peanut butter. ]

Close-up. The camera zooms in to the pink jar of peanut butter. The packaging reads ‘ Enjoy your trip!’ and follows pink characters ‘Romance’.

Wild shot. The camera shots vertically from the up and includes both the woman and the table.

[The woman stands up on the chair and opens the jar. She puts the jar of peanut butter on the table and she walks up into it.]

Shot cut. Sound clear. Go black.

Close-up shot at first with no sound. Then pulls to the medium shot with music and noises in the background. The frame is filtered in pink.


[Scene two: The woman’s face displays at first, with eyes closed. Then eyes open suddenly.  With the camera pulling back, you can see a man is kissing her. The woman and the man are sitting face-to-face inside a café.]

Montage(quick cut). The frame is still filtered in pink and a lively music is played in the back.

[She and he walks on the street with fingers crossed. They’re chasing each other. They sit down, drink beer and chat. They’re waiting for the subway. She leans her head on his shoulder on the bus. They ride bikes. Suddenly, the woman falls down the bike.]

Medium shot. The lively music is cut. The camera pushes toward the woman from the man’s point of view. The frame is still filtered in pink.

[The woman falls down the bike. She flops down with her back to the man. When the man arrives and pats her shoulder, she turns around with her nose bleeding. She punches the man right in the face.]

Shot cut. Go black.

Close shot. The camera shots the fainted man from the woman’s point of view. The frame is still filtered in pink.

[The woman takes out a pen from her pocket and turns on the yellow light on it. The man is slowly falling into pieces and is absorbed by the pen. Then the pen begins to absorb the whole surrounding around the woman until all pink is gone. The woman is standing alone in the black void.]

Shot cut. Go black.


[Back to Scene one.]

Medium shot. The camera pans from right to the center of the kitchen. Another lively music is played in the back.

[The woman is sitting in front of the table. She hums a song, drinks tea and writes smoothly. She is writing with THAT pen with a yellow light blinking swiftly. The book which she is on the cover lying on the table.]
